The Department of Handlooms and Textiles is functioning under the aegis of Commerce and Industries secretariat of Government of Karnataka. The department has offices in all the districts headed by Deputy Directors / Assistant Directors. Apart from this, there are 4 divisions headed by Joint Directors. The department is headed by the Commissioner for Textile Development and Director, Department of Handlooms and Textiles. please see the organization structure.
The Department through it’s exclusive Textile Policy is striving to promote investment in Textile sector. The department is implementing various schemes for handlooms, powerlooms, wool sector, co operative sector etc. The department also coordinates and implements various central government schemes for betterment of textile sector.
Textiles is the second biggest sector after agriculture in terms of employment. Thus the role of the Department in the growth of the economy is pivotal.
The Department of Handlooms and Textiles has been proactive in achieving it’s objectives. It has an exclusive policy for promotion of Textile Industries and number of schemes for the support and welfare of handloom and power loom weavers.
